Yemi Anbesa

Yemi Getachew, a trailblazing immigration lawyer, was born on June 2, 1966, in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. She dedicated her entire life to helping individuals find refuge and a new beginning in the United States. Her life’s journey was one marked by compassion, advocacy, and a relentless commitment to justice. Yemi’s battle with leiomyosarcoma cancer ended tragically on November 6, 2022, but her legacy as a fierce advocate for immigration rights lives on.

 

After completing her law degree at the Addis Abeba University, she practiced law in Ethiopia before arriving in the United States. She studied briefly at Santa Clara University where she passed the bar exam and became an immigration attorney shortly after. Yemi excelled in her studies, driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of those seeking a better opportunity than the one they were appointed with.

Yemi’s career as an immigration lawyer was nothing short of remarkable. She was a tireless advocate for the rights of immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. Yemi had an exceptional ability to connect with her clients on a personal level, making them feel heard and valued during their challenging journeys. Yemi’s influence extended beyond her legal practice. Outside of her legal career, Yemi Getachew was a loving mother to her one daughter, Adey Nash, a sister to her big brother, Dan Getachew, a daughter to everyone’s favorite, Mama Teru and the best auntie to Haile and Mahlet Daniel. She cherished moments spent with her abundance of friends and loved ones gathering everyone together over great food and fellowship. Her warmth, humor and unwavering support enriched the lives of those around her and inspired each person to go after their wildest dreams. 

 

In 2019, Yemi was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma cancer, a battle she fought with the same determination and strength that characterized her legal career. Despite the challenges, she continued to work and advocate for her clients until her health prevented her from doing so. Yemi’s passing on November 6, 2022, was a heartbreaking loss to the entire Ethiopian and legal community.

Furthermore, she went above and beyond by providing food and financial assistance to alleviate the financial burdens that often accompany cancer treatment.
